Starting with the pros, there is so much to do in many of these communities. Many of them have lifestyle directors who organize social events and activities. You don’t have to participate, but it can offer more opportunities to stay busy and get to know your neighbors.
The 55+ communities also have nice amenities. You might have courts for pickleball and tennis. Pools and fitness centers are also common. Some communities have parks with walking trails.
There are also regulations about home appearance and upkeep. Some might consider this a con, but these rules serve an important function. With rules about upkeep, you won’t have homes that look bad in your neighborhood. It helps to maintain a pleasant environment and protect property values.
These communities are also peaceful. Most HOAs will have rules about noise to keep things quiet at night. There are also rules about having people stay at your home. It means you won’t have homes with a bunch of people coming and going all day.
The first con for many of these communities is that they are more expensive. Similar homes in regular communities usually cost a little less.
There is also the issue of HOA fees in addition to other housing expenses. The HOA fees go to maintaining the community and its amenities, but they are an additional cost.
Home sizes are often limited in these communities. The expectation is that most residents will be older and not have kids living with them. That means most homes have two or three bedrooms. You might also find some with four bedrooms.
Most of these communities also set restrictions on having people stay with you. They have age limits concerning who can stay with you. Many of these communities have age limits for what they consider a child. They might also limit how long a child can stay at your home.
